Up Arrows and Mustaches

There have been few young players this season standing in a brighter spotlight than the one Pirates fireballer Paul Skenes basks in on a daily basis. Good thing he’s got the arm strength and mustache might to protect him from the glare!

Skenes’ popularity naturally extends over to the card market, evidence of which you can find right down there in our list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week (bottom of post).

Will he keep rubbing elbows with the elite of the game and hobby? Will he keep setting style trends in society at large?

Hard to tell what the future holds, but Skenes seems to be having fun with it all right now, at least.

Speaking of the unpredictability of the future, here’s another guy who was once a young baseball man who had the world by the tail…

Checking in on Manny Ramirez Baseball Cards

This week, we continue our ongoing series focused on guys who once looked like Hall of Fame locks but who remain on the outside years after they retired with a different sort of player — Manny Ramirez.

While earlier installments featured great players who tailed off late in their careers — Dave Parker, Dale Murphy, Ron Guidry, Dan Quisenberry — Manny’s stats stack up well with even the upper echelon Hall of Famers.

But Ramirez ran afoul of baseball’s PED rules, and that effectively sidelined his chances of Cooperstown election. Still, Manny was one of the most feared sluggers of his generation, and plenty of collectors still love his cards.

Below are eight key Ramirez rookie cards from 1992, spanning different companies and parallels. For each card, I found selling prices for copies in the most common graded condition (via the PSA Population Report and Auction Prices Realized tools) from both late 2019 and from this spring (2024).

Overall, this group of Manny cards saw an increase in selling price of 64% over the last five years — lower than we’ve seen in recent “studies” for batters like Dave Parker, Dale Murphy, and Al Oliver.

Part of that relatively lackluster showing is no doubt related to the overproduction of most of these Manny cards. Part is due to his PED taint. Part is because Manny’s card prices were already pretty high — for the sets they’re in — before the pandemic.

Still, even with the Hall looking pretty impossible, Manny’s cards at least didn’t go down in price since 2019.

Here are some cards whose proud new owners are definitely hoping do better than “didn’t go down” in the coming months and years…
