K is for Kershaw

We don’t often find a Clayton Kershaw entry among the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay in a given week…but we have one this time around!

On the heels of Kershaw’s 3000th strikeout earlier this month, one of his 2006 rookie cards checked in last week at nearly $16,000 on eBay, landing fifth in our lineup (see bottom of post for full list).

A few grand north of that? None other than all-time great Christy Mathewson. So, did Big Six ride Kid K’s koatttails into the hobby promised land? Hard to say for sure, but Kershaw’s accomplishments definitely brought all-time great pitching into the limelight.

And we also hardly ever see Mathewson in these parts, so maybe it’s a thing.

Speaking of a guy we hardly ever see around here, but who maintains a rabid hobby base anyway, let’s go…

Checking in on Dale Murphy Baseball Cards

Earlier this month, we took a look at recent top-selling Dale Murphy baseball cards on eBay over on our YouTube channel:

Murphy, of course, was one of the greatest players in the game during his prime with the Braves in the 1980s. And, after winning back-to-back National League MVP awards in 1982 and 1983, he was also one of the early drivers of the 1980s hobby boom.

Once a sort of forgotten card, his 1977 Topps rookie pushed to the front of the line of late-70s RCs, trading elbows with the first cards of guys like Andre Dawson, Eddie Murray, and Bob Horner. Murph settled into steady superstar status through the mid-to-late 80s, but a quick decline in his 30s left his career numbers short of most Hall of Fame standards.

Even so, Murphy’s big peak value and still-solid overall stats make him a viable Cooperstown candidate for many of his legions of fans. It helps his case that players with similar or lesser resumes have found their way to a plaque in recent years: Harold Baines, Jim Rice, Dave Parker, etc.

So…

Since it’s Hall of Fame weekend, and since Murphy is already on our minds, this seems like as good a time as any to take another pass at some of his most iconic baseball cards.

What follows, then, is a rundown of ten early Murphy cards, spanning his modest start into the first of his truly huge years. For each card, I found the approximate selling price for copies in PSA 8 condition (PSA 9 or PSA 10 for some later years) from both summer 2024 and summer 2025 (per PSA’s Auction Prices Realized tool), then looked at the difference.

Overall, these ten Murphy cards increased in selling price (based on our limited sample sizes) by about 1% over the last year. So, pretty flat in a fairly flat overall “old” card market.

Not too surprising, given that Murphy hasn’t really been in the news much in the last year or so. If he ever gets the call to the Hall, we can probably expect a healthy spike in buying/selling activity around his cards.

Of course, all of these results come with a grain of salt. Specifically, most/many of these don’t trade at a very high volume these days, so the selling prices are at the whim of in-the-moment buying decisions for the small sample sizes we have here. Indeed, there’s hardly any action around Murph’s 1982 Donruss card, so the values listed above are more or less extrapolations from older sales numbers.

Still and all, Murphy is about as blue-chip a card subject as a player can be without being a Hall of Famer. And that Cooperstown status could still change someday.

Now, here are some cards whose new owners certainly hope their new cards can hold onto their blue-chip status at least until they’re ready to sell…
