Rookies and Cookies

Take a look at the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week (bottom of post), and you’ll find the usual explosion of young stars and could-be stars.

But right from the top, you’ll also find vintage cards to satisfy just about any era yearn you might have, starting with the iconic 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card, which isn’t really a rookie card at all. Not to worry, though, because three real Mantle rookies (1951 Bowman) also made the roster.

Not to mention 1952 Berk Ross Mantle and Willie Mays cards, three Roberto Clemente rookies, a 1982 Topps Traded Cal Ripken, Jr., and plenty of other goodies sprinkled throughout the years.

And speaking of sprinkles, that’s a “treat” word if I ever heard one, and the list below offers up its own sweet treat in the form of a 1954 Johnston Cookies Hank Aaron card.

Checking in on Mike Schmidt Baseball Cards

Last month, we took a look at recent top-selling Mike Schmidt baseball cards on eBay over on our YouTube channel:

Schmidt has been a hobby star for 45 years or more, starting in earnest with his huge 1980 season, when he hit 48 home runs, won the National League MVP award, and led the Phillies to their first World Series title ever.

Of course, by then, Schmidt had already won multiple Gold Gloves and home run titles, and he’d keep right on rolling as the hobby picked up steam in the 1980s. By the time he retired in 1989, Schmidt had won three MVP awards, eight homer titles, and ten Gold Gloves.

He also retired with 548 home runs and a sure ticket to the Hall of Fame, which he redeemed in 1995.

Along the way, and since, Schmidt has enjoyed a steady hobby following, sometimes swelling to “hot list” territory. His 1973 Topps rookie card (shared with Ron Cey and John Hilton) was the most valuable 1970s card of them all for many years, and it’s always in the conversation even today.

So, since we’re watching and thinking about Schmidt, I thought we’d take this opportunity to give his cards the old before-and-after treatment.

What follows, then, is a rundown of 11 early Schmitty cards, spanning a bit more than the first half of his career. For each card, I found the approximate selling price for copies in PSA 8 condition (PSA 9 and 10s for the 1981s) from both spring 2024 and spring 2025 (per PSA’s Auction Prices Realized tool), then looked at the difference.

Overall, these eleven Schmidt cards increased in selling price (based on our limited sample sizes) by about 11% over the last year. That’s not too bad in the context of a pretty flat overall market, especially considering that Schmidt hasn’t done anything particularly newsworthy for a while. (Incidentally, that’s also the same bump we saw for George Brett cards a few weeks back — the rivalry continues!)

The general trend is that the older Schmidt cards went up in price over the last 12 months, while the newer ones went down. Of course, you have to take all of this movement with at least a partial grain of salt. After all, most of these cards don’t trade at a very high volume these days, so the selling prices are at the whim of in-the-moment buying decisions for the small sample sizes we have here.

Still, Schmidt’s cards are doing what you’d expect blue-chippers to do — meet or exceed the overall market. And, when it comes to 1970s and 1980s baseball, no one was as consistently great as Michael Jack Schmidt.

Now, here are some cards whose new owners certainly hope turn out to have the same sort of hobby value legs as Mr. Schmidt does…
