Who’s Your Ace…Turley or Hearn?

We’ve seen some pretty interesting cards change hands at the top of the auction market in recent weeks, and the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week (bottom of post) certainly didn’t disappoint in that regard.

Checking in on Reggie Jackson Baseball Cards

Late last month, we took a look at recent top-selling Reggie Jackson baseball cards on eBay over on our YouTube channel:

After a truncated rookie season in 1967 (just 35 games), Reggie took up his role as a baseball sensation at 22 years of age in 1968 when he hit 29 home runs in 154 games.

It was only up from there for the self-proclaimed “straw that stirs the drink,” starting with 47 home runs in 1969 and followed with an early version of Mr. October as his A’s won three World Series from 1972 through 1974.

Along the way, Reggie won the 1973 American League MVP award and built himself into one of the biggest stars in the game. Signing as a free agent with the New York Yankees seemed like some sort of diamond destiny: the glitziest player landing with the richest team.

In the Bronx, of course, Reggie’s mystique took on a whole new sheen as he led the Bombers to two straight titles, smacked three home runs in a single World Series game, fronted a candy bar named after him, and even spiced up manager Billy Martin’s already fiery temper.

And, when all was said and done at the end of his career in 1987, Reggie was a 563-homer Hall of Fame lock.

So, since we’re watching and thinking about Jackson, I thought we’d take this opportunity to give Reggie’s cardboard the old before-and-after treatment.

What follows, then, is a rundown of eleven early Reggie cards, ranging from 1969 and all through the 1970s. For each card, I found the approximate selling price for copies in the most common graded condition (according to the PSA Population Report) from both spring 2024 and spring 2025 (per PSA’s Auction Prices Realized tool), then looked at the difference.

Overall, these eleven cards increased in selling price (based on our limited sample sizes) by about 2% over the last year. That’s pretty flat performance, inside the context of a mostly flat wider vintage market. There are a few more “up arrows” in that list up there than there are price decreases, but it’s nearly a wash for the whole shebang.

And the vaunted Reggie rookie was almost completely flat, pricewise, in PSA 7 condition over the last year.

But, like other players we’ve looked at recently (like Tony Gwynn), Reggie hasn’t been in the news really at all in the last year, so there’s been no impetus to move his cards forward. In the long term, though?

Well, Reggie has been a hobby star for decades, and cards of all-time greats tend to at least keep pace with the overall market and usually look pretty good over the course of decades.

Now, here are some cards that have a ways to go to make the long term look rosy, given their starting point…
