Ichiro Just Warming Up?

With the baseball offseason now a couple of weeks old, we’re starting to see players move or re-sign in various types of transactions. The yearly awards are also starting to be handed out.

That can only mean that we’re just a few weeks away from the 2025 Hall of Fame ballot taking center stage in the baseball news cycle. And, if you take a look at the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week (bottom of post), you might get a preview of what’s headed our way, routed through Cooperstown.

To wit, for the first time in a while, we see an Ichiro card in our lineup. Will that become a more common occurrence as the two-continent star head toward what could be a unanimous election?

We’ll see as the stories unfold over the next couple of months.

In the meantime, here’s a hobby story as old as time…or at least as old as cherry cookies.

Checking in on 1963 Fleer Baseball Cards

Late last month, we ran down the most Fleer baseball cards recently sold on eBay over on our YouTube channel:

That blanket treatment was pretty interesting and allowed us to showcase cards across several different years. But when I started working on this follow-up, I realized that there was one Fleer issue that we haven’t devoted much energy to over the years: 1963.

The 1963 Fleer set was something of a hobby landmark, as it was pretty much the only non-Topps set featuring active major league players during the monopoly years of 1956 through 1980. Sure, there was the 1976 SSPC “pure” set, but it was unlicensed and the cards didn’t come with a cherry cookie in each pack.

It was also sort of an opening salvo for the Fleer v. Topps court battles that would eventually break the hobby open in 1981 and help it boom like 1950s babies the rest of the decade.

So, yeah, 1963 Fleer is our focus today.

What follows, then, is a rundown of selling prices for the ten most expensive 1963 Fleer baseball cards (via the PSA Auction Prices Realized tool) in PSA 8 condition (the most common graded condition for the set).

Overall these cards showed a 137% increase in selling price over the last five years, which means they’re hammering down for around twice as much now as they were in late 2019.

This is a pretty interesting set in lots of ways, and the prices above reflect that. It’s not every day you see a checklist leading the way from a price perspective, but this one is notoriously tough to find, especially in top conditions.

Same goes for Adcock, who was an All-Star-level slugger but not a Hall of Famer. In fact, the Adcock-checklist tie is even tighter than that, as the checklist was issued only in the final print run of the set, replacing Adcock on the uncut sheets.

All in all, 1963 Fleer is a fun jaunt through hobby history and remains an important stepping stone to where we are today.
