Never Seen THAT Before!

Continuing a trend we saw ramp up a couple of weeks ago as baseball’s postseason field started to dwindle, Babe Ruth storms back to the top of our “leader board” this week.

To wit, there are five amazing vintage Ruth cards among the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay from last week (see bottom of post).

But even beyond Ruth, this week’s roster is chock full of some pretty incredible vintage cards that hardly ever show up — Jackie Robinson from a 1960 Japanese set, anyone?

All in all, this week’s list is more fun than a barrel of Rangers and Diamondbacks.

And speaking of someone who knew a thing or two (TWO, specifically) about winning World Series…

Checking in on Kirby Puckett Rookie Cards

This week on the Wax Pack Gods YouTube channel, we paid a visit with an old hobby favorite who’s become something of a forgotten man in the glitzy modern era of collecting.

But, man, Kirby Puckett’s key cards all fall right in that 2-3-year window in the mid-1980s that saw the hobby really explode for the first time. You can check out our Puckett video here.

As has been the case in recent weeks, I thought that vid makes a good excuse to check in on how Puck’s cards have fared during these peri-pandemic years.

So here’s a rundown of Kirby Puckett rookie cards, with approximate selling prices (per PSA’s Auction Prices Realized) for the most commonly-graded conditions both before and after the pandemic.

So Puckett’s values are up across the board. But only one of them managed to double in price over the last four years — the tough, black-bordered 1985 Donruss card, which has more or less tripled.

On average, though, these Puckett RCs have increased just a nudge over 70% in value since before we knew what “social distancing” meant. Come to think of it, that’s about the same sort of growth we saw for another career-cut-short guy, Don Mattingly, a few weeks ago.

Hmmm. Is that a pattern I smell? Or just a coincidence? Migth be worth a closer look one of these weeks.
