Chances Are (Approaching) 50/50

Take a look at the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week, and you’ll see one name dominates the proceedings — Shohei Ohtani.

No surprise for a guy is staring down the barrel of baseball’s first 50/50 season, right? Whether or not Ohtani actually gets to 50 home runs and/or 50 stolen bases will be decided in the next couple of weeks.

In the meantime, can he improve on his hobby showing of nabbing about one-third of the top slots below? We’ll find out in about a week.

And then, after the Dodgers do whatever they’re going to do in the postseason, we can all start to ponder again about whether Ohtani will return to the mound next season, and if he does, just how good can he be?

One cat whose mound exploits we already know all about is the subject of our deep dive this week.

Checking in on Greg Maddux Baseball Cards

Recently, we had a “discussion” over on Twitter/X about who the greatest living Hall of Famer is now that Willie Mays is no longer with us. As you might imagine, there are some pretty strong opinions on this topic — check out that ongoing thread and be sure to chime in on your pick.

One guy who I expected to get quite a few nods but who only showed up a couple of times was the great Greg Maddux.

Even so, plenty of collectors still love The Professor, and his cards are still active in today’s market. Proof of that from our recent video running down his top sales:

Keying off all that, I thought it would be fun to take a look at how Maddux’s early cards have performed over the last five years.

So…

Below are a dozen key early Maddux base cards, spanning from his 1987 rookie cards through his 1989 issues. For each card, I found selling prices for copies in PSA 10 condition (via the Auction Prices Realized tools) from both late 2019 and from this summer(2024).

Overall, those Maddux cards have shown a 118% increase in selling price since late in 2019. That’s pretty much in line with the numbers we’ve seen for other big names like Dave Parker, Keith Hernandez, and 1952 Topps (yeah, not a player but a big name, nonetheless).

Those are nice gains, even when you factor in the general pandemic hobby boom, especially when you consider that Maddux has been largely out of the limelight for ten years, since his Hall of Fame election in 2014.

Now, here are some cards that aren’t having much trouble finding some limelight of their own…
