A Fine Vintage? Maybe in 30 Years

If you came here looking for a run of fine, old pasteboards among the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week … well, better luck next week.

Maybe it’s the hype surrounding the end of the regular season or the start of the postseason. Maybe the old-men cardboard dandies just needed a breather this time around.

Whatever the case, the list at the bottom of this post is (almost) all about current players and their current, fancy baseball cards. There is a Hank Aaron sighting down below, though even Hammer checks in with an entry from 1999.

But, hey, if you really need some old-school dominance, you’re in luck! Because now we turn to the portion of the program where we go ….

Checking in on Nolan Ryan Baseball Cards

Last month, we took a look at recent top-selling Nolan Ryan baseball cards on eBay over on our YouTube channel:

Ryan was one of the most dominant pitchers of all time and emerged as an unprecedented hobby force in the early 1990s — his cards have sat at or near the top of the value food chain ever since. Whenever there’s a Ryan card in a set, there’s a decent chance it’s also the most expensive card in that set.

Even so, Ryan hasn’t thrown a pitch that counts for more than 30 years and has been in the Hall of Fame for more than a quarter century. There’s not much newsworthy about him, in other words, so what is there to move his cards forward?

Just plain old blue-chip hobby pedigree and new generations discovering the joy of a Ryan fastball (thanks to YouTube and other online archives) … and his baseball cards.

So how about we give Ryan’s cardboard the old before-and-after treatment? Sounds good to me!

What follows, then, is a rundown of ten early Ryan base cards. For each card, I found the approximate selling price for copies in roughly the most common condition (according to the PSA Population Report) both late summer 2026 and late summer 2026 (per PSA’s Auction Prices Realized tool), then looked at the difference.

Overall, these ten cards increased in selling price (based on our limited sample sizes) by about 72% over the last year. That’s more than a healthy return, especially when you consider that — as we talked about above — Ryan hasn’t been in the limelight much.

Will his cards produce the same bump every year? Probably not, but cards of all-time greats tend to at least keep pace with the overall market and usually look pretty good over the long term.

Now, here are some cards that have a ways to go to make the long term look quite so rosy, given their starting point…
