A Hawk Escort?

Take a look at the list of the most expensive baseball cards sold on eBay last week (bottom of post), and something might jump out at you — if you’re eagle-eyed…or Hawk-eyed.

There among all the Ohtani and Mantle and super-vintage tobacco and candy cards is a specimen we don’t encounter too often in these parts these days: an Andre Dawson rookie card.

Sure, it’s not surprising that a PSA 10 of Hawk’s 1977 Topps RC would turn some heads, but it’s definitely a rare bird on lists like this one. But it could be that Dawson’s appearance here is just the start of at least a few more cards from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s showing up here in the coming weeks.

With Pete Rose’s death on September 30, one of baseball’s most polarizing figures has once again been making headlines, and that usually translates into a flurry of cardboard activity. We’ll see how that plays out next week.

For now, one of Rose’s contemporaries is ready for a moment or two in the Market Report spotlight.

Checking in on Dave Winfield Baseball Cards

Over on our YouTube channel, we recently took a look at the most expensive Dave Winfield baseball cards sold on eBay during August of 2024:

Couple that with our summer rundown of the baseball cards of fellow 1974 Topps rookie-card bigwig Dave Parker, and it seems like now is as good a time as any to see how Winfield cards have fared in the hobby over the past several years.

So…

Below are the first ten Winfield base cards, which takes us from that 1974 Topps rookie card through his three 1981 cards, including his first Donruss and Fleer issues.

For each card, I found selling prices for copies in the most common graded condition (via the PSA Population Report and Auction Prices Realized tools) from both late 2019 and from this summer (2024).

Overall, those ten cards showed an increase of nearly 170% over the last five years or so, more than doubling in value. That trumps the 120% we saw for Parker and more than doubles the 75% increase we saw a bit earlier for Dale Murphy.

The interesting thing about Winfield’s cards compared to those of the other two gents is that Winfield doesn’t relaly have anything to keep him in the hobby limelight. While Parker and Murphy come up all the time in discussions about players who fans and collectors think should be in the Hall of Fame but aren’t, Winfield is already there.

So these price bumps just look like nice, steady long-term growth for 40-50-year-old base cards of a player who was among the best in his generation.

Now, here are some cards which may or may not be able to match Winfield’s growth in the long-term, but which undoubtedly sit near the summit of recent auction sales…
