We usually focus on graded cards when we come together once or twice a week in this space, and for good reason(s) ….

Graded cards give us a level playing field for comparisons across time and even across sets, sort of like the various Sabermetrics (uh) metrics purport to do for baseball stats themselves.

A 20-win season in 2023 means something almost entirely different from a 20-win season in 1983.

But a 138 ERA+ means pretty much the same thing in both seasons.

Similarly, a “mint” Eddie Murray rookie card in 1983 meant something quite different from a “mint” Eddie Murray RC in 2023.

But a PSA 9 Murray rookie in 2023 is the same sort of mint that a PSA 9 Murray rookie was in 2013.

As true as all that may be, the fact remains that most of the baseball cards running around out there in the world today are NOT graded — they’re raw.
