Form 1979 -1994 I sold Baseball,Football,Basketball,& Hockey cards at various card shows throughout California. When Beckett's sports price guide first came out in 1979 & created the "Sports Card Buying Frenzy" as a Investment opportunity they targeted Upper Class Yuppies who were looking for a hobby & and potential profit for the future. Yes it was considered a Investment opportunity from 1979-1994, but, from the advent of " Special insert cards" & the (WWW) Internet it made collecting cards form those years, a non- Investment opportunity enterprise, & back, to just a Fun hobby. I have 80 Wax Pack boxes, & at over 250,000 individual cards from those years ranging in value from $.05 to $50.00 all non-graded. Only "Graded" sports cards rated by PSA/BBG or other grading companies at an 8 or above, are now considered a smart Investment. Cole G.

Appreciate your perspective, especially considering you've been in the hobby since the very beginning of the boom. I came along a few years later and agree it's been fun the last few years to be able to buy the cards from my youth for a relative song. Thanks for reading and chiming in!

The value of cards ,like any commodity, is strictly related to the quantity available. Cards of the 50s and 60s value up simply because there just wasn't the amounts in the marketplace.

Today with multiple companies, sets, and styles battling for marketshare, I don't foresee many of todays issues ascending in value for a very long time. That may be an investment to some, but most people want to see return in THEIR lifetime.

Agree that part of the reason for 50s and 60s cards maintaining and increasing in value is their relative scarcity, especially in top condition. I wonder if the limited-number pieces produced today might stay relatively strong, too.

I was looking through some of the prices for 1993 Finest Refractors recently -- they've done OK price-wise over the years.
